Welcome to St Mary's Science Blog.
We hope you find some fun experiments to try at home
as well as some cool science links to explore.
Don't forget you can also find worksheets,
homework sheets and study information.
TERM 1 2017..........
LET OUR SCIENCE CLUB BEGIN.......
TERM 1 2016
WHAT'S NEW
Whats new on the Science Web Page........Check out the new SCIENCE CLUB page. We have so much happening in science club that we have started a whole page dedicated to the fun we get up to.
START UP WEEK..............MAKING ICE-CREAM...........FIND THE RECIPE ON THE SCIENCE CLUB PAGE
TERM 4 2015
Science classes have taken off this term with loads of fun activities to engage the students in their term topics. Year 3/4 students are looking at melting and freezing and how temperature affects materials. On Monday they melted and refroze ice using salt. Year 5/6 students are looking at electricity so this weeks activities were based around static electricity. Ask your 5/6 student if they can use static electricity to bend water or pick up paper. Year 7 students saw the result of their term 3 efforts. They finished last term creating super saturated solutions. Having left their solutions to evaporate over the school holidays, their crystals had time to slowly grow undisturbed. Some of the results were amazing
STAR GAZING NIGHT
Members of the Oasis club with their biggest telescope
|
Tuesday night (18th August) saw a small but enthusiastic group of St Mary’s families gather, in the hopes of seeing the wonders of the heavens. Three local Mildura star gazes from the Oasis Club, kindly brought their telescopes to the Mildura aerodrome to show the kids the night sky ‘up close’. Unfortunately the heavy clouds did not clear much, but in the small gaps that occurred, students where able to witness the craters and mountains on the moon and a few lucky students even witnessed the twinkling stars that did show themselves. Oasis members were so excited with the enthusiasm of the students that they have promised to return in a few weeks, when hopefully clearer skies will allow us to view more. So mark Tuesday 15th September in your diaries to come and join us again.

SCIENCE WEEK 2015
MAKING WAVES -THE SCIENCE OF LIGHT
The highlight of science week was definitely the visit from the Questacon Science Circus. Thank you to the presenter Ben and Zach for
engaged and entertained all the students with
their stories, tricks and experiments.
Want to try some fun activities at home, check out the Questacon web site

But that is not all that has been happening........Don't forget the Year 7's running activities Tuesday lunch time
We had bending light, optical illusions, coloured shadows, splitting white light into rainbows and creating the colour white using all the colours of the spectrum
Year 5-8 students have also had the opportunity to become citizen scientist, classifying and measuring galaxies. We hope they have showed their parents how.
Anyone family can join in from home, simply click on the galaxy explorer link |

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SCIENCE CLUB
In science club we have recently had "runny races" where we saw how different liquids have different viscosities. Some are very viscous - thick and not very runny, while others are less viscous making them more runny.
We have also predicted and looked at what substances dissolve in water. Some disappear completely, some change the colour of the water and some don't dissolve and make the water go cloudy

Science meets Art
Science clubbers today used chromatography to separate the colours from textas and create cool art works. Year 7 students have used this technique to understand different methods of separating
Visiting Science Show
All students participated in the Discovering Science Program on the 19th or 20th March. The visiting presenters helped unlock the mysteries of electricity and magnetism. Some of the shows highlights were the Static electric Van der Graaf generator, the super strong hand magnets and the lunch time rocket launch. Check out the slow motion videos and pictures below
2015 sees the revival of SCIENCE CLUB
and from the interest we have had, St Mary's is a school full of STEM enthusiasts
come along any Wednesday 2nd break and be involved

FOOD FOR OUR FUTURE....SCIENCE FEEDING THE WORLD
SCIENCE WEEK ST MARY'S STYLE - August 16th-24th 2014
SCIENCE WEEK ST MARY'S STYLE - August 16th-24th 2014
Activities for Science week included
- The whole school Baking Bread after exploring the wonders of yeast and how it reacts to produce carbon dioxide
- Playing with carbon dioxide in the science room at lunch time
- Watching science demonstrations in assembly
- Trialling the diet coke and mentos experiment on the oval. This experiment was not really about feeding the world.....but it sure was fun
St Mary's students experimenting with CARBON DIOXIDE GAS.........you know, the gas that is one of the main green house gases. Do you know what the other green house gases are? Check this link to find the answer
